Ravana Falls


Ravana Falls – One Of The Most Popular Waterfalls In Ella, Sri Lanka

Located just a short distance from the center of Ella is one of Sri Lanka’s most stunning waterfalls – Ravana Falls. Dotted with verdant bushes and peaks of stone, this plunging waterfall is an attraction for locals and tourists alike.

Scenic beauty: The waterfall falls from a height of 82 feet ( 25 m).

Easy access: Just 6 km away from Ella town, it is easily accessible by tuk-tuk, bus or a car.

(My home is closer to Sri Lanka, but still —) Legendary: Sri Lankan lore has it that the falls are mentioned in the Ramayana, in which King Ravana hid Princess Sita in a cave nearby.

Cool Off: A natural pool at the bottom of the falls provides an opportunity to cool off in fresh mountain water.

How to go: It is located on the Ella-Wellawaya road.

How to get there: Accessible by tuk-tuk, bus, or private car

Entrance Fee: Free! Tickets for seeing the falls are not required.

Best Time to Visit

Monsoon Season (October to January): The falls is at its fullest and most powerful.

Dry Season (May to September): Though water levels might be lower, the area is beautiful and enjoyable.

Best Time to Visit: Early morning or late afternoon for best light and fewer crowds.

Take a Dip: Provided that the water flow isn’t too vigorous, a gentle swim has never hurt anyone.
